Without exaggeration it could be said that energy poverty has a woman’s face. Every day women encounter the consequences of limited access to modern energy sources. They give birth to children in darkness, work in kitchens full of smoke and risk their life while collecting firewood in the mountains.

“Little Earth” is implementing a project “Clean energy and women on the Roof of the World”. Within the project 20 women from two high-mountain Pamir villages (Nisur and Ruhch) take part in capacity building training and green energy workshops and will get sustainable energy devices to improve their livelihood.

“The Energy Café” was opened in remote mountainous Nisur village, located in the upper part of Bartang Valley, Pamir. It will provide access for local residents to clean and affordable energy and Internet resources. This became possible thanks to a joint project of Little Earth and Norwegian Nature Conservation Society. The idea of “energy cafe” was supported by EKOenergy Foundation.

On 13 October 2016 the round table devoted to preliminary outcomes of the project «Clean energy and women on the roof of the world» has been held in mountainous village of Savnob, Gorno-Badakshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO). The event was organized by the «Little Earth» with assistance of the NGO «Oyandasoz» (local partner in the Bartang River valley) and with support of US Forestry Service.

Mrs. Oshurbika Malabekova, 54 years old, Roshorv village

I am 54 years old and I live in Roshorv village in Bartang Valley. My family consists of 6 people. In our house we always face problems with the lightening and heating. Cooking of meal and boiling of water also need fuel, but firewood here is a big deficit. They are expensive to buy. In winter time 400 Tajik Somoni is required to bring a vehicle with firewood from forestry, plus 500 Tajik Somoni for petroleum and 300 Somoni more for the driver’s service. But we need also to buy meat and forage for livestock. And we spend a little to buy the cloth.
