People living in remote rural communities in Tajikistan face serious difficulties in access to energy sources. This is the main reason for the increased pressure on scanty natural resources in mountainous areas. The lack of access to such services as electricity supply has a negative impact on livelihoods in local communities and impairs their capacity for further development. Women and children have to bear the main burden of problems caused by energy poverty.

On November 17-18, 2017, a two-day hands-on workshop devoted to construction of solar dryers took place in the high-mountain village of Nisur (Gorno-Badahshan Autonomous Region of Tajikistan). The workshop helped ten women from the most vulnerable families participating in the project "Pure Energy and Women on the Roof of the World" implemented by the environmental organization The Little Earth with support from the US Forest Service to acquire new useful skills.

They give birth to children in darkness, work in kitchens full of smoke and risk their life while collecting firewood in the mountains.
