The early 2018 has brought a pleasant surprise to 20 women from Yapshorv and Barchadiv villages of the Bartang valley in GBAO (Gorno-Badahshan Autonomous Region). Being participants of the Project "Clean Energy: Sustainable Communities" implemented by the Little Earth with support from the Democracy Commission Small Grants Program they received free sets of energy efficient equipment.

People living in remote rural communities in Tajikistan face serious difficulties in access to energy sources. This is the main reason for the increased pressure on scanty natural resources in mountainous areas. The lack of access to such services as electricity supply has a negative impact on livelihoods in local communities and impairs their capacity for further development. Women and children have to bear the main burden of problems caused by energy poverty.

On November 17-18, 2017, a two-day hands-on workshop devoted to construction of solar dryers took place in the high-mountain village of Nisur (Gorno-Badahshan Autonomous Region of Tajikistan). The workshop helped ten women from the most vulnerable families participating in the project "Pure Energy and Women on the Roof of the World" implemented by the environmental organization The Little Earth with support from the US Forest Service to acquire new useful skills.

Without exaggeration it could be said that energy poverty has a woman’s face. Every day women encounter the consequences of limited access to modern energy sources. They give birth to children in darkness, work in kitchens full of smoke and risk their life while collecting firewood in the mountains.

“Little Earth” is implementing a project “Clean energy and women on the Roof of the World”. “The Energy Café” was opened in remote mountainous Nisur village, located in the upper part of Bartang Valley, Pamir. It will provide access for local residents to clean and affordable energy and Internet resources. This became possible thanks to a joint project of Little Earth and Norwegian Nature Conservation Society. The idea of “energy cafe” was supported by EKOenergy Foundation.
